Mac's Believe It or Not!

You are probably asking yourself what is wrong with the CD 241 Hemingray-23
below. NOTHING! The embossing on the skirt is centered below the groove on the
top. However, when you look at the CD 241 just below the regular CD 241, you
will see that the ears are at a 45 degree angle.
The mold that was used to produce this unusual find by Ken Cleveland had the
top plate turned out of position when the piece was made.
Since the top plate was not in the correct position, two thin layers of glass
were produced where the lower half of the ears are normally molded. If this
piece ever saw service, it is amazing that these ledges of glass survived.
Ken's special piece was located at Jamie's Flea Market in Amherst, Ohio. This
is the second time the "bizaar and unusual" has been found at Jamie's.
The other piece located there was the WRIC club logo insulator, the CD 141.7
Twiggs Patent, -- Believe It or Not!
Believe It or Not! -- Mac made a mistake in my August 2000 column.
In that column I discussed the reassignment of old CD 139.6 and its
assignment by N.R. "Woody" Woodward to CD 174.5, a new CD number. John
Siegwart of Birmingham, Alabama had found an example of this rare Pyrex product
and sent it to Woody for inspection. John's piece had an inner skirt. That sent
up a "red flag" in CD-land! Checking with Butch and Eloise Haltman,
who own the only other known example, we found that their insulator also had an
inner skirt. So, the CD 139.6 was an incorrect assignment for the piece the
Haltmans own.
A scale drawing was made by Elton Gish of the new CD 174.5 found
by John Siegwart. The top of the Haltman piece had a different crown
configuration, and I incorrectly adapted Elton's drawing to replicate the
Haltman insulator to show the depression under the edge of the crown.

Fortunately, I am finally able to correct the information on CD 174.5. John
Siegwart and Butch Haltman brought their insulators to the national show in
Atlanta in July. I was able to get a comparison photo of the two insulators
together. (See previous page.) And, Elton Gish was able to correctly draw the
Haltman insulator showing its unique crown configuration as well as the skirt
style which differs from the Siegwart piece.
Even though there are crown
differences, BOTH remain as CD 174.5.
